Are you registered to vote? It could help your credit report

Are you registered to vote in the UK? It could help your credit report.

The EU referendum takes place on 23 June, and you must have registered on the electoral roll by 7 June in order to be eligible to vote in it.  For a postal vote, your application needs to arrive by 5pm on 8 June, while the proxy vote (someone else voting on your behalf) deadline is 5pm on 15 June.

Who can vote in the EU referendum?
If you’re 18 or over on 23 June and you’re registered to vote in the UK, you can vote in the EU referendum, as long as you are one of the following:
– a British or Irish citizen living in the UK
– a citizen of a Commonwealth nation or overseas territories living in the UK who has leave to remain in the UK
– a British citizen living overseas who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years
– an Irish citizen living overseas who was born in Northern Ireland and who has been registered to vote in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years

What about EU citizens living in the UK- can they vote?
I’m afraid not, apart from those from Ireland, Malta and Cyprus as they are also in the Commonwealth. The rules are broadly the same as for a General Election. EU citizens can register on the electoral roll, but can vote only in local government and certain other elections.

Did you know that being on the Electoral Roll also could help improve your credit report?
It’s important that your credit report includes your Electoral Roll details
, as lenders use this information to help confirm your name, address and where you’ve lived before. This info usually has to be up to date before they are willing to offer a mortgage, a loan or any other form of financial account.

How could it negatively affect you if you aren’t on the Electoral Roll?
Not being registered could cause a delay when you apply for credit, while the lenders confirm your details some other way. With some lenders it can even hurt the credit score they give you, and some applications may even be turned down.

How long will it take to show up on my credit report?
It may take a little while for this information to appear on your credit report, as councils usually process updates to the Electoral Roll once a month and send the information to the credit reference agencies like Experian.  For more information on that check out our full article How long will it take to update my credit report after I register on the electoral roll.

How can I register to vote?
You can do it at the Government’s official site at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote – it shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes. You may need your passport and National Insurance number. You can also update your existing details there, such as name, address or whether you want to vote in person, by post or by proxy.

If you are unsure whether you are registered or not, or would like to register for the first time, you could visit About My Vote, type in your home postcode and find out your local registration office.

Doesn’t help your credit report what so ever it’s just away that the government can keep tabs of your address, I’ve been on the voters role for long enough and have seen no significant improvement on my credit score waste of time

Hi Darren, being on the electoral roll can have a positive impact on your report. This is because lenders use electoral roll information to verify your address details when you apply for credit, making you easier to identify, and so more likely to get accepted. Regards Joe
