Working with Experian - the key stages

Consultation stage – this is where we discuss your customer files, understand your likely risk segmentation and agree what would be a sensible trial sample to enable Experian to design the risk and data optimisation segmentation. At this stage we would also discuss various customer contact strategies to handle the customers not covered by the data identification phase.

Data trial phase – we would take the agreed trial sample(s) and run analysis and processing to identify the optimum segmentation. This would be provided to you with approximate statistics for the full project. Trial samples may not be appropriate where volumes are relatively low. In these cases, benchmark samples may prove to be sufficient.

Written proposal – following the trial process and project design work, Experian would provide a written proposal with timetables, methodology and costs.

Pre-processing stage – upon approval of the proposal, Experian will begin the phase of organising the customer files. This activity will include:

  • conversion routines to standardise data formats

  • cleaning and enhancing data to maximise identification rates

  • defining match rules and data sequencing

  • segmenting and defining personal and business customers

  • constructing personal data sets for business owners/directors

Data appending stage – having organised the customer files the next stage is to identify data sets from the Experian databases. Experian has the largest database of consumer and business records in the UK. But the real strength is the depth and breadth of this data, which is so pertinent for identification purposes. These assets are then appended to your customer records.

Risk segmentation stage – this stage filters and eliminates those customer records that do need to move to the re-identification stage. In conjunction with client portfolio or account based information, Experian will use the appended data to segment the files into risk groups.

Re-identification stage – once the data has reached this stage in the process Experian can employ the following approaches:

  • validation – confirm the identity exists using a cumulative count approach

  • data based verification – check the customer owns the identity using an index based/scored approach, and then for those records that still require confirmation,

  • manual verification – by collecting supporting documentary evidence

Data output and storage stage – the process must be completed in a way that is open to inspection and review. At this stage Experian can make available the:

  • method of re-identification

  • level of re-identification satisfaction/confidence

  • supporting corroborative material

All of this information can be stored by Experian as a managed service and subsequently accessed as required. Alternatively, or it can be provided as output records.

We feel it is important to keep you informed at all stages of the project and shall provide feedback and consultation throughout the work stages we undertake. In some instances ,feedback on results of files will be essential to refine the final way in which we perform the re-identification stage.
