Will postcode discrepancy affect my credit rating?

James

I always have problems with my postcode, as it doesn’t match the one on the electoral roll? The last letters read YD but my postcode is PJ. Do you think this has had an impact on my credit when I have applied for credit? How do I get this changed? Thanks,

Hayley, Worcester

Hayley,

A disagreement about your address could cause your credit rating to suffer because it could lead to positive information being omitted from your credit report. If your local council and Royal Mail have different postcodes for you, you need to establish which is correct and then make sure any incorrect records are promptly put right. Start with Royal Mail: you can call their postcode helpline on 08457 111 222 Monday to Friday between 6pm and 8pm. They will confirm your correct postcode. If the electoral roll needs changing, contact the electoral services department of your local council and ask them what you need to do make this happen. Once they have changed it, send all three credit reference agencies confirmation of the change so your credit reports can be updated. Once that’s done, the issue should no longer be a worry for you.
