My partner was recently subjected to fraud when someone stole his account details and used it to purchase goods. Would this type of fraud affect your credit score when applying for a mortgage? Thanks,

Unless he has asked us to clean up his credit report, I'm afraid it's more than likely that your mortgage application will be affected by the fraud, which is why I am recommending that he orders a copy of his credit report as soon as possible and checks it through carefully. If he spots any information he doesn't recognise it will probably relate to credit taken out in his name by the fraudster. He must then get in touch with our Victims of Fraud team where a specialist adviser will liaise with lenders on his behalf to sort things out. I really hope I'm wrong and that your partner's compromised account was a one-off — but in my experience once a fraudster finds someone with a good credit history, they will use their personal information to make multiple applications for credit and leave a complicated mess to untangle. You are sensible to think of checking your credit report before making an important loan application — it's the best way to make sure you discover any problems before they affect your application.
