How can I update my late son's credit report?

James

Recently my son died tragically. There are some outstanding loans, which have not been settled, and he (his estate) will be declared insolvent. I would like to know what happens to his credit report now, also as he was in rented accommodation does the address where he was living now have a black mark which could affect any new tenants or the landlord's financial and/or credit ratings. Also, is it possible to remove his credit history from all credit reference agencies now?

I'm sorry to hear of your terrible news and my thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time. One of our Credit Crossroads advice guides - Bereavement or serious illness - actually covers some of the things you mention, including updating your son's credit report. It also includes some advice about deceased identity fraud, which I'm afraid to say is a problem and is something you should take steps to prevent. You really don't need to worry about you son's former landlord or any future tenants because credit report information is recorded against people not addresses. Only when people join up their finances - for instance, by applying for credit together - can information about one person affect the credit rating of another.
