Why did I fail a recent ID check?

James

An organization has used Experian under the money laundering regulations and say that Experian has "been unsuccessful in adequately identifying you". This enquiry is nothing at all to do with credit ratings and is simply for evidence of identity. I have been at the same address and on the electoral roll since 1985. What has happened and how can it be rectified please?

To help confirm your identity when you apply for financial products, many organisations use an identity score based on the information on your credit report. This saves most people the time and hassle of having to submit paper-based proofs of identity when applying for a savings account or, say, some shares. But this doesn't work for everyone and in a few cases - perhaps because there is insufficient information on someone's report or a small discrepancy - the organisation will instead revert to asking to see conventional documents. If you order a copy of your credit report you should be able to work out why we couldn't use your report to help the organisation identify you. But if the reason doesn't become clear, get in touch with us and we should be able to explain it for you and, if there is a discrepancy, help you sort it out.
