 About the information we hold

You are here:  FAQ Home > About Experian > The info we hold

Am I on a blacklist?
return to top

No, there is no such thing as a blacklist. We only hold factual information about people. This is taken from the public records or is provided by lenders. We do not offer opinions about your creditworthiness (that is, whether you are likely to repay credit).

Lending companies make their lending decisions based on information held by credit reference agencies, additional information you may have provided during your application, and their own internal processes.

Our information shows that most people are good payers and make repayments on time. 474

Where does Experian get its information from?
return to top

Our information comes from two sources—lenders and public records. The information only relates to making sure a customer could repay any credit they are applying for. 478

What sort of information does Experian hold on my credit report?
return to top

Your credit report may include public record information (e.g., the electoral roll) obtained from Local Authorities and details of court judgments, bankruptcies and voluntary arrangements. It may also include financial and credit account information which is supplied from lending companies such as banks, building societies, and other financial institutions. 540

Why does Experian hold credit account information?
return to top

Major lending companies have agreed to share details of their customers' credit agreements with each other. To enable them to do this, they store details of their agreements with one or more credit reference agencies. This allows them to check how a person has repaid other lenders in the recent past and gives them an indication of whether applicants can afford to repay or take on new credit agreements.

To see what information is held by the credit reference agencies you need to contact them directly and order a copy of your credit report. Click here for information about ordering your personal credit report. 488

Does Experian hold different information to the other credit reference agencies?
return to top

Yes. Because we are a totally separate company to Equifax and Callcredit, some of the information we hold is different to them. You may want to contact the other two UK Credit Reference Agencies for a copy of the information they hold. Click here for the other credit reference agencies’ contact details. 910

Can I prevent Experian from holding information about me?
return to top

No. In fact, we have a legal right to hold information about people. Credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit) help lenders quickly process credit applications. If we did not hold such information then it would be much harder for you to obtain credit. A good credit record makes it easier for you to get credit. 480

Does Experian hold information about addresses outside the United Kingdom?
return to top

We can only provide you with a credit report based on addresses you have lived at in the UK. If you live in Ireland, or have done so in the last six years, please let us know. We will then help you apply for a credit report from Experian in Ireland. 567
