Operating System
The controlling software which governs the execution of all the functions of a computer and the programs that it runs. Applications and software packages need to be compatible with a given operating system in order to execute. Examples of operating systems are MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, UNIX, VMS, OS/400 and OS/390.
