Financial Strategy Segments (FSS)

Classification of financial behaviour in the UK

What can it do for me?

Financial Strategy Segments (FSS) helps you understand your customers by providing a comprehensive portrait of an individual's financial behaviour. FSS is unique in its ability to distinguish the financial behaviour of all adults and households in the UK.

How can we help you?

FSS enables you to identify your highest value customers, to benchmark performance, identify opportunities for new products and services locally and to optimise communication for improved response.

A few key facts

  • FSS recognises that many financial transactions are driven by personal preferences, whilst others are more closely associated with the household. FSS distinguishes these and provides a solution that classifies the financial behaviour of individuals and households.
  • FSS classifies the total population of the UK into 82 individual behavioural types. These are aggregated into 45 household types and 13 household groups.
  • The classification includes the use of Experian's demographic and lifestyle information and behavioural data from NOP's financial research survey, one of the UK's longest and most consistently run financial tracking surveys.
  • The statistical data used within FSS is supported by an analysis of the broader social and economic trends that drive social change and influence our financial behaviour. This work is conducted by Future Foundation, Experian's team of leading social researchers.
