How can I get credit with no fixed address?

Dear James,

I live on a narrowboat with no fixed address and use my work address to have my bank statements etc delivered to as I have no one else I can trust to take my personal mail in for me and I am at the office everyday so it made sense to me. However, I am now finding it affects me applying for credit as credit reference agencies will not recognise my office address as my care-of address. Is there anything I can do to resolve this as I'm basically being told to commit fraud in order to get credit by using someone else’s address?

Andrew, Watford

Dear Andrew,

Although you say you have no fixed address, I’m assuming that because you have an office job you are likely to moor your boat in a particular area during the week, perhaps a local marina or something like that. If this is the case, you should be able to register on your local council’s Electoral Register at that address, which is always the starting point for any credit check. As far as I’m aware, there is also nothing to stop you using the same address for credit applications too, while specifying that your post needs to be sent to a care-of address for security purposes. Using any sort of care-of address is not fraud, as long as you’re not doing it for criminal gain. I hope this helps.
